May was Better Hearing & Speech Month, and Rochester Hearing & Speech Center took the opportunity to host an "Ears & Beers" seminar at the Bug Jar in Rochester with a focus on hearing conservation. This event, in collaboration with Dutch Creatives' Collaborative, focused on hearing health for musicians, music lovers and those who work in the entertainment industry.
"Ears & Beers" featured an interactive presentation hosted by RHSC's Director of Audiology, Dr. Gregory Horton Au.D., on how to safeguard hearing when exposed to loud music and entertainment environments, and why even music teachers who are exposed to repeated and prolonged music of varying intensities are also at risk for hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
While this event was targeted to musicians, it is important to note that:
5 in 10 young people listen to their music or audio too loudly
4 in 10 young people are exposed to dangerously loud noises at concerts and sporting events
The fastest growing demographic for individuals experiencing hearing loss is under 30 years old
The World Health Organization estimates 1.1 billion young adults worldwide are at significant risk of hearing loss from recreational noise exposure.
Dr. Horton also did on-site earmold impressions for custom musicians' plugs for those who attended. These specialized plugs help protect hearing without sacrificing the fidelity of sound- something that is critical for musicians.
